About Us

The Salamanca Arts Centre (SAC) is a non-profit, self-supporting Arts Centre, housed in buildings owned by the Government of Tasmania and leased to SAC Inc. It is landlord to more than 75 arts related organisations and individuals, and manages 10 performing and visual arts venues.

SAC is an Incorporated Association managed by an Executive Committee which is elected by its membership.  The Executive Committee appoints a Director to administer the Centre and guide it in carrying out its aims and objectives.

Our vision
The arts as integral to the everyday life of Tasmanians.

Our mission
To advance the arts in Tasmania through leadership, quality arts programs, services and management of the Centre.

Our objectives
Salamanca Arts Centre was founded in 1976 as a community and arts centre on objectives that remain the same today.

  • To develop in Tasmania a greater knowledge, understanding and practice of the arts.
  • To increase the accessibility of the arts to the public of Tasmania.
  • To promote community involvement in the practice of the arts.
  • To provide cooperation between practitioners of the arts.
  • To provide exhibitions of works of art.
  • To provide teaching.
  • To advise and cooperate with institutions, government departments, social authorities and other bodies on any matters concerned directly or indirectly with these objectives.

Management Structure

The Salamanca Arts Centre operates as part of a long-term, visionary partnership between Salamanca Arts Centre Inc (SAC Inc), the Tasmanian State Government and the Hobart City Council.

The Centre is non-profit and self-funding, gaining most revenue from its role as landlord to more than 75 arts related organisations and individuals and managing 10 performing and visual arts venues.

SAC Inc is a membership based incorporated association with its own Constitution. Membership is open to anyone who supports the aims and objectives of the organisation.  Members elect representatives to the SAC Inc Executive Committee at each Annual General Meeting.

The Oversighting Committee is a committee of review and consists of representatives from State Government (from Treasury, Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment and Arts Tasmania) and from SAC Inc. This Committee was established under the requirements of the Government’s Head-lease.

The Executive Committee is the policy and decision making body of the organisation.  It consists of 9 members elected from the SAC Inc. membership and one co-opted position.

The Sub-committees are Arts, Building Management and Finance.
