Salamanca Arts Centre presents PARALLEL

Dates: 10 - 5pm, 5-31 August 2008.
Venue: Long Gallery, Salamanca Arts Centre

The world of the paranormal and the unknown will be explored in Salamanca Art Centre’s major visual arts exhibition for 2008,
PARALLEL. Commissioned by Salamanca Arts Centre and curated by Dr Brigita Ozolins, the show is based on the simple idea that the everyday world is not what it seems. It is part of the Tasmanian Living Writer's Week program and will feature the work of ten artists who convey ideas about the subconscious, the unknown, the paranormal and unseen energies and forces, inviting audiences to contemplate the links between art, spirituality and parallel states of being.

PARALLEL includes the work of Pat Brassington, Ruth Frost, Julie Gough, Lorraine Jenyns, Sally Rees, Alyssa Simone and Matt Warren, all based in Tasmania; Anne Ooms and Eugenia Raskopoulos from interstate, and Jordan Baseman from the UK. All make work that evokes a desire to engage with something that may exist beyond the everyday, objective, rational experience of life. Using video, installation, photography and sound, they suggest that all is not what it seems and that our everyday lives are underscored by experiences and events that indicate other levels or modes of being.

Visitors will be able to experience an elaborate altar to the end of time and hear people relate stories about a near death experience, emerging from a coma, and watching the skies for UFOs. They will see a magical projection of a tiny girl inside a bell jar, hear voices emerging from pictures, and imagine the occupant of a strange bed with a seaweed mattress and possum skin pillow.
