Ever After

Exhibition in Sidespace Gallery

Presented by Salamanca Arts Centre

Ever After - an exhibition of paintings by Christiana Szczerba that investigate identity issues, referencing fairy tales and their archetypal characters, to address the absence of contemporary guidelines for growing up.

Those who want to grow up aren't quite sure how to go about it. The goal posts have moved. The same things that made us 'Grown-ups' in the past, and in fairy tales - marriage, financial security, home ownership - are much less culturally and socially relevant. The traditional markers of a successful adult, we find, often do not make us magically happy or fulfilled, as they do for fairy tale characters. Women especially, struggle in this regard - girls continue to go back to old notions of 'Grown up', because there are no satisfactory new guidelines. There are not new guideposts of adulthood for women, we only have the old model, plus the old male guideposts (career and financial success) thrown in on top. So rather than a new adult role to wear, women find themselves with just a doubly heavy old role to lug around.
