Arcady and Van Diemen’s Land

The exhibition consists of a collection of drawings by the artist Lindsay Broughton, in a range of media, techniques and scale that focus on the juxtaposition of the ideal of ancient Greece and its antithesis, the brutish realities of life in colonial Van Diemen’s Land.

The drawings were produced during residencies in Thassos, an island in the north of the Aegean, the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris and from studies made in the British Museum. Lindsay Broughton is currently artist-in-residence at St. Michael’s Collegiate School, Hobart where he has produced larger works from studies.

Arcady and Van Diemen’s Land alludes to extremes of the human disposition: from a nobility of mind and aspiration on the one hand to abject depravity in the treatment of fellow humans on the other.

The exhibition’s theme is the disconnect between the idealism of Greek antiquity, as manifest in the colony’s art and civic architecture during the first half of the 19th century and the inhumane realities of the Van Diemen’s Land convict system.

Interwoven within the theme of the exhibition, the artist has alluded to the systematic genocide by the colonists of the Tasmanian Aborigines from the land they inhabited for millennia. He explores this with an installation of the Photographer’s Studio, where the last of the ‘full-blood’ aborigines were posed for potential anthropological studies.
