Object to Artefact

Object to Artefact is a solo exhibition by emerging artist Matt Barclay intended to inspire fascination in the familiar by challenging preconceptions of value. Through a collection of artworks responding to mundane items prevalent in any typical home, this exhibition explores the transformation of ubiquitous forms into charged, revalued artefacts. Items have been selected for their unsentimental status, transcendence of social class, for our dependence, and simultaneous lack of awareness of them. The work aims to incite a sense of wonder in unremarkable items, documenting, aestheticising, and monumentalising them using labour intensive processes.

This exhibition is a survey of artworks from Matt’s recent artistic projects, highlighting overlooked items and rituals in everyday life, through ceramic and glass sculptures.
