Song in a Strange Land

This exhibition comprises a suite of oil paintings by Ron Wilson that explore
the music and migration experience
of the Arauco Libre band,
celebrating their thirtieth anniversary in Hobart.

When a group of political exiles from Chile arrived in Hobart thirty years ago last November, a band called Arauco Libre was formed. They played the haunting music of their homeland, music of the Andes, with its distinctive instruments including the pan flute, charango and bombo. Salamanca Market became their theatre and for the next 23 years every Saturday morning Arauco Libre seduced the crowd with their songs about justice, longing for homeland and hope for the future. Using the genre of still life, the exhibition reflects on how the instruments can communicate these ideals.
