The Music of John Lewis
& The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ)

Presented by The Hobart Jazz Quartet : Kelly Ottaway, Matt Boden,
Nick Haywood
, Ted Vining.

The Modern Jazz Quartet
performed over a 40 year span
creating their own niche,
specialising in elegant, sophisticated Jazz.

Come along and re-visit their wonderful music with The Hobart Jazz Quartet.

On Friday 20 July 2018 the Salamanca Arts Centre’s Founders Room will feature the music of John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ), a Jazz group established in 1952 that played music influenced by classical, cool Jazz, blues and bebop.

The MJQ performed over a 40 year span with only one personnel change, and during that period carved their own niche by specialising in elegant, restrained, sophisticated, improvised music, with a strong blues reference.

For this performance a quartet of Tasmania’s leading contemporary Jazz musicians will present a program of some of the better known MJQ compositions, including Django, Skating in Central ParkBags Groove, Milano and many more!

The Hobart Jazz Quartet is:

Kelly Ottaway : An outstanding musician, piano, keyboards, vibraphone – has been performing for over 10 years with leading Australian Jazz artists in Jazz, Funk and Soul music. Currently tutoring ensembles and arranging at the Tasmanian Conservatorium.

Matt Boden : A Jazz pianist, composer, arranger, orchestrator, producer, and recipient of numerous awards, grants and prizes from various Festivals and Industry bodies. Originally from Hobart, Matt has returned home after much globetrotting, including a 7-year stint performing and recording in Paris.

Dr Nick Haywood : The consummate bass player, Nick can be heard as a featured artist on something like 100 CD’s, and has been nominated, and won, just about every Award – Aria’s, Apra’s and Bell’s. He has presented Master Classes at Universities and Music Colleges around the world and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Music at the University of Tasmania.

Ted Vining : Needs little or no introduction to Jazz audiences in Australia, as a drummer/performer, Festival Artistic Director, Jazz Coordinator, Teacher, Radio Show Host, and 2017 inductee to the Australian Jazz Hall of Fame.  Ted is no stranger to the music of the MJQ, having performed and recorded it at Jazz Festivals and Clubs as a member of the famed Alan Lee Quartet in the 1970’s and 80’s.
