Salamanca Arts Centre and Hobart City Council are proud to present the work of acclaimed Chinese artist Li Gang, in celebration of the Year of Chinese Culture in Australia.

Curated by the Australian artist Tony Trembath, Li Gang: in the grey scale presents recent photographic work of this Australian-trained Chinese artist.

Li Gang produces large and enigmatic images of contemporary East Asian urban spaces. His images of people moving in the cities of Beijing and Seoul, reveal a remarkable poetic sensitivity.

Using hand-built cameras, Li Gang introduces risk and accidents to these works.  In his photographs, instead of control and mastery, there is magic and mystery.

Included in the exhibition are examples of Li Gang’s extraordinary hand-made cameras.  These cameras are essential to his working process and are in themselves like sculptures.

Li Gang is a graduate of Victorian College of the Arts. Since returning to Beijing in the late 1990s, he has maintained a diverse practice, which includes painting, sculpture and photography.
