The Call of Aurora by Joe Bugden, is based on Douglas Mawson’s 1911-1914 Antarctic expedition. The opera investigates the relationship between Mawson and Sydney Jeffreys – the wireless operator who, during the eternal night of the winter of 1913, goes mad, believing himself to be Jesus Christ.
The Call of Aurora seeks to show how History can show some in one light, whilst casting others into the shadows of obscurity.
