The political is personal :
emerging artist Nadia Refaei
explores the female body
as a political site of conflicting cultural meanings.

Nadia Refaei reflects on a personal struggle to uncover identity while existing in a ‘third cultural’ space, explored through performative languages of the body. The artist approaches this work from her perspective as a Muslim-Australian woman, raised partly in the Middle East. Artistic motivations converge with personal experiences of discomfort, tension and the need to navigate an existence within and between two systems that place the weight of culture on the bodies of women.
