A Real Ruby

Enter an imaginary lab
of magical and mnemonic specimens,
artefacts and experiments,
exploring a hybrid ecosystem
that takes a necessary departure from habitual ways of perceiving the ‘natural’ world.

Saturated landscapes draw on a variety of objects to generate portals into manipulated and enhanced realities, or unrealities. These landscapes also consider the merging of nature and culture, organic or synthetic and the human or non-human. Hovering on the verge of beautiful and grotesquely kitsch, A Real Ruby seeks to invoke a sense of the magical; embracing a synthetic aesthetic to emulate similar connections as sensuous experiences of ‘natural’ phenomena.

This body of work adopts material, methods and processes from science and technology, exposing other worldly effects in the everyday. The gallery emerges as a scientific museum that moves, spins, hovers, tricks, hides and reveals.
