Anxiety and Wonder

200 Convicts. One Boat.

This exhibition tells the stories of convicts who sailed from the British Isles to Australia. Some could not read or write, some had never seen the ocean before. Most were transported for petty crimes, and all left someone they loved behind – children, husbands, wives, parents.

Using mixed media collage emerging artist Eleanor Leleu tells their dramatic true stories of love and survival, crime and punishment, elation and sadness.

Australia was completely different to the convicts’ homelands.
Most of them made it.
