Bringing back the bones is an exhibition
of costumes and wearable art
by SAC Resident Artist Deva O’Wheel
inspired by the Greek myth of
Persephone’s journey to the Underworld.
With costumes created by incorporating recycled and vintage clothing with found objects as well as original fabrics and screenprinted designs. The focus is on the return of the Dark Queen to the realm of Mother Earth where each spring she comes back to tell the story of rebirth, hope and harmony.
An exciting feature of the exhibition is a collaboration with photographer Amy Brown. Six characters are placed in the wild landscape of Kunanyi (Mount Wellington) where they are held by the spirit of the mountain and seen through the photographer’s eye directed by the wind, light and shadows of nature. Each character represents (in bodily form) the persona of the costume as participant in the story of Persephone’s return. The images created are an essential element of the exhibition. Featuring (opening night only) a procession of the Dark Queen and her entourage as they emerge from the underworld to create a visual and visceral impact through the fusion of costume, movement and music.
Returning to her island home after a long absence Deva brings her skills (packed in a suitcase after running away from the circus) as an artist, costume designer, sustainable clothing creator, event coordinator, arts administrator and community artsworker to present Bringing back the bones.
