Colourfields of Memories

Presented by Salamanca Arts Centre.

An exhibition highlighting
emerging artist Catherine D’Orazio‘s
artistic process,
the weaving and rearranging of memories
through ritual, routine and reflection.

“My practice is driven by process, weaving and rearranging memories through ritual, routine and reflection to create non-objective, colour-field works on paper.

In response to the complexity of my emotional psyche, I respond minimally. My ritualistic practice of adding and subtracting fine, highly-pigmented watercolour layers on paper allows me to visualise my emotions; in an attempt to make sense of, and control them. Colour choices and responses are intuitive, focusing on light, luminosity and materiality. Boundaries are set with masking tape to control the watercolour process, using the width of the masking tape to dictate my frame, allowing the colour to breathe and resonate against the stark white border.

Through routine, I create groupings of colour-fields through a process of reflection and reply. I start by creating a colourful centre that expands outwards into other colourful planes or works. From this process I arrive at a stage where the body of work is harmonious and resonates within itself. This format encourages the viewer to experience the grouping of colourful planes; to go back and forth between them; and have a personal response through immersion and contemplation. Contained within a white box frame and floated on a white matte backing, the works become sculptural objects, the frame pushing and pulling focus from the stark white borders in and around the colourful planes.

My process has formed a visual of memory of my emotions over time. Contained within the border these colour-fields of memories can be contemplated and reflected on.”
