Doppelgänger is an exhibition
by emerging artist Ingrid Andersen
of abstract portraits that often,
and unwittingly, portray a familiar face.
From German folklore the Doppelgänger “double goer”, is an apparition of a living person, as distinguished from a ghost. The concept of the existence of a spirit double, an exact replica of every one of us, is an ancient and widespread belief.
Those viewing the works often have the experience that they are looking at someone known to them.
The concept is also represented in Norse mythology, as a vardøger, a ghostly double who is seen performing the person’s actions in advance. In Finnish mythology, this is called having an etiäinen, “a firstcomer”.
(Names, characters, and images depicted in this exhibition are the products of the artist’s imagination. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental).
