Home-Scapes II

Home-Scapes II is a portrait of
Mary Elizabeth O’Byrne, the artist’s godmother
– an ordinary and extraordinary woman,
a contemporary and intimate friend
of Pridmore’s mother.

Inspired by Virgina Woolf’s To The Lighthouse (for the artist Mary Pridmore, Mary O’Byrne was another Mrs Ramsay), and Edouard Vuilard’s suggestive, patterned interiors, these cigar-box-sized gouaches build a (loving) homage to Mary O’Byrne’s life.

Memory and reality are fused, the images reflect on the eccentric and homely interior of the red-brick suburban house in Launceston where she lived her last 20 years. They evoke, too, the wild, overgrown garden beyond and the mountains in the distance. Some contain figures, but most depict empty spaces (scenes of a vanished (much loved) life).
