About special guest Steve Brien

Steve Brien special guest at Jazzamanca Winter series An acclaimed jazz guitarist, Steve Brien established himself in the Sydney jazz scene in the late 1970s, playing with local jazz musicians such as Dale Barlow, James Morrison and Don Burrows. In 1985 he won an overseas study grant and went to New York City, where he spent two years studying part-time with Jack Wilkins and John Scofield and playing with many New York musicians. He returned to Australia in 1987 and toured with the James Morrison Quintet, travelling extensively through Australasia and Europe. In 1992 Steve returned to the US, establishing himself on the Connecticut jazz scene where he played with many local and New York jazz musicians. He returned to Australia in 1998 to join the faculty of the Sydney Conservatorium and continues to maintain a busy performance schedule. In 2005, he was awarded a Masters of Music from the University of Sydney. In early March 2020, as Covid-19 shut down live entertainment across the world, Steve and his wife Carrol decided to make their “shack” in Tasmania their permanent home. Steve has been busy teaching online for NSW Conservatorium and picking up the threads of Launceston live jazz by meeting local musicians and going to jam sessions and gigs… as well as helping out in the home veggie patch.
