LIGHT of a FEATHER

Schemochromes, iridescence, pigment and diet –
the colour of a feather

Sexual dichromatism (colour differences between sexes) is largely due to female preference for bright colours in males. Good genes, a healthy diet and the strength to stand out in a crowd have driven the vast display of colour, pattern and form of bird feathers. These colours are not produced by pigments alone. They can also be created by structures in the feather, manipulation of light and diet.

This is a photographic exhibition by Cassandra Faux illustrating the methods and beauty of colour production in feathers.
