The Arctic :
Documenting Nature

Exhibition inspired by The Arctic Circle

This exhibition shows a collection of artwork produced as a result of a The Arctic Circle organisation’s residency program, that gives artists, scientists and educators an opportunity to travel to Svalbard, Norway on a tall-ship. Svalbard is a remote archipelago that is located largely within the Arctic Circle, east of Greenland, administered by Norway, with permanent Norwagian and Russian settlements, under the Spitsbergen Treaty. With the northernmost permanent settlements of humankind on one of its islands, the archipelago is now a home to scientists and researchers from various countries and civilians engaged in tourism, fisheries and coal mining.

During the 7 days on the ship, people from different disciplines including but not limited to visual arts, music, literature and science, navigated through this unknown terrain to gather information and inspiration related to their interests. The environment and the history of the place was translated into sculpture, song writing, photography, painting, video and drawings. What was produced both onboard and after the trip was expression of how we humans collect, store and express knowledge and information that ranges from aesthetic to scientific, as well as the possibilities of combining both worlds. Through presenting this rich spectrum of medium that expands our perception about how information is to be passed on, the exhibition explores how we communicate knowledge, from geological data, to emotions, and how it interacts with the audience.
