captured in a slow-drying medium.
An exhibition by emerging artist Mara.
“There’s magic in the room at a band rehearsal. There are looks, and jokes, and gestures, and a rhyme and rhythm that sparks and takes control. There’s no audience to impress, just music doing it’s thing. It’s a strange privilege to witness without taking part, but that strange privilege was mine, intimate and uninhibited, in a dimly lit studio on one of the hottest days of last summer. My photographs were quick and loose in an attempt to capture the ephemeral – the movement, the funk, the heat – and then, in an act of contradiction, I immortalised the images in oil; layer upon layer using a relief technique of my own devising, revisiting and revealing the vulnerability of each moment as I painted.”
