The Kingdom Retrospective

This solo exhibition by Phyllis Fiotakis
presents a collection of linocut prints
spanning the last twenty years,
selected from the body of work created in response to time spent in Saudi Arabia.

These prints explore the connection between identity, culture and place, with each piece describing the artists relationship to these ideas as it has evolved from early experiences defined by the foreign and unfamiliar, to developing a personal connection with a previously strange place.

The earliest of these prints were made while living in Saudi Arabia, many of which are based on drawings done after the artist moved there. This era of work largely explored the imagery of the veiled woman as a representation of  the artists desire to navigate her place as a woman within a new, foreign and sometimes restrictive culture. As the unfamiliar becomes familiar, the drawings and prints begin to describe more intimate and personal observations of a society once little known to the artist, and still enigmatic to many.

The most recent prints are made in response to the artists physical absence from the country and in retrospective of the large body of work the experience inspired. Phyllis has become interested in the artefacts and objects that embody her memory and nostalgia.

The exhibition explores the evolution in discovery, attachment and inspiration the artist experienced over twenty years of navigating life in Saudi Arabia and responding through art-making.
