The Space Between

There are spaces between things
if you know where to look.

There is that moment between night and day when time is suspended between one passing and the other yet to come.  When the sun goes down the lines between reality and illusion become blurred, shadows disappear into the darkness, and anything becomes possible.  That space also exists in the threshold between life and death, in the fleeting moment when someone has a foot in each world before passing beyond our reach. It is between love and loss, when we only realise what we had after it is gone.  It is between dreaming and waking as we emerge, disoriented, from the depths of slumber.  And it is between madness and sanity when our senses become so heightened, our emotions so fraught, that we cannot distinguish between one and the other.  We could easily become lost in that space, slipping into an alternate realm where the familiar becomes strange and we lose all sense of time.

The Space Between by Kim Anderson is an immersive installation of large-scale drawings, light, shadow and sound transporting the viewer into a liminal world where the air becomes thick with memories and echoes of the past, layers of time and human presence building up like a palimpsest.  Large-scale drawings on Japanese Sekishu tissue are suspended from above, accompanied by an original soundscape especially composed for this installation by Ballarat musician Fukusan.  When illuminated and stirred by the breeze, causing shadows that shift and animate the space, these spectres come alive in a melancholic dance, mesmerising the viewers walking amongst them into a dreamlike reverie.

The Space Between made its highly successful debut at White Night Ballarat in 2017, and this is Kim Anderson’s first exhibition in Hobart.
