Curated by Gina Haywood and Rachel Bremner.
Rachel Bremner‘s work challenges the common perception that mosaic is solely a decorative medium and clearly reflects the international burgeoning of mosaic art as mainstream contemporary artistic expression.
Rachel Bremner explores a consciousness of line and placement of pieces to achieve an expressive ‘andamento’ or flow within the imagery, with an aim of achieving a three dimensional depth of field. Every piece is hand-cut with hammer and hardie and placed with purpose. Specialty tools are chosen according to the material to be cut, whether marble, smalti, gems, rocks and minerals, and laid into mortar spread onto a lightweight substrate.
The best of contemporary mosaic, as represented in this exhibition, has everything in common with all human artistic expression, with highlighted dimensions of manual skills and palpable meditative process.
