t[wo] islands a bricolage is a multi-media installation showing fragments of sound,
painting and text that reference
Ireland and lutruwita/Tasmania.
As process and improvisation are core elements of Andrea Breen‘s creative process,
some work will be generated or re-worked
during the installation.
Performances will be offered at 1:00pm each day.
Creativity involves processes of engagement with generative features such as: place, materials, ideas, imagination, memory, identity, politics, environment, senses and emotions. The choices we make might be contingent on multiple factors but creativity is also frequently improvised, in the moment of making and re-making, as a human-body in time and space.
Improvisation continues to be central to all my art-making, performances, text and sound explorations. During the installation in the Sidespace Gallery Andrea Breen will be improvising – in sound/word/painting/movement – in the space and inviting guests to respond, collaborate or witness events.
“I will also display bricolage, fragments of improvised (and re-worked) objects created and gathered during, and in response to, self-directed residencies between 2015 and 2019 on the t[w]o islands: lutruwita/Tasmania, where I have lived and worked for more than 40 years; Ireland, visited several times pre-pandemic and where I have family history and relatives.
Some work will be re-experienced during the installation. Themes of my practice circulate around, and are prompted by, emerging moments in lived experience such as: age and identity, responsibility, relational presence, the climate crisis, the natural world, activism, well-being, exile/home, sense-of-the-ordinary and sense-of-place.”
