Window to the Soul:
Tintype portraits of Tasmanians in the Arts

A technique from the dawn of photography captures compelling portraits of the contemporary Tasmanian Arts community.

The mystical ability of artists to see more deeply into the world around us seems to lend their gaze a striking clarity. Window to the Soul captures those eyes using tintype portraiture, a 160 year old photographic process experiencing a global revival by artists including Tasmania’s Phillip England.

Tasmania has become a centre for artistic, artisanal and cultural endeavour. Window to the Soul celebrates 30 or so of the creative spirits that comprise this regional renaissance of the Arts in Australia.
