Creative Explorations
with Tara Lorenzen (Trisha Brown Dance Company) :
Physical Investigations of Place
Salamanca Arts Centre Founders Room
November 3-5, 2014
Multi-disciplinary architecture firm Liminal Spaces joined forces with Salamanca Arts Centre and the HyPe Program to sponsor NYC’s Trisha Brown Dance Company member Tara Lorenzen to undertake a three day “Art of Risk and Challenge” workshop with Tasmanian performing talent. Artists from across Tasmania took workshops in movement, repertory and site explorations with Tara Lorenzen from the Trisha Brown Dance Company (NYC). They experienced the genius that is Trisha Brown, investigating her processes for collaborative art-making and participating in a creative practice that has the capacity to translate across art forms.
Background
Trisha Brown Company, Inc. (TBDC) has presented the work of post-modern dance pioneer Trisha Brown since she left the experimental Judson Dance Theatre to work with her own dancers in 1970. Her movement investigations found the extraordinary in the everyday and challenged existing perceptions of performance. TBDC offered its first performances at alternative sites in SoHo district, NYC’s architectural landscape playing an integral role in Brown’s early artistic explorations. When later designing works for the stage, Brown engaged leaders in music, theatre, and visual art as collaborators like Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage or Laurie Anderson amongst others. With her partners, she built an exceptional body of work and changed how audiences view the traditional proscenium stage. TBDC offers regular NYC seasons and tours extensively to present Brown’s 100+ masterworks, from site-specific tasks to large ensemble compositions and operas. TBDC teaches Brown’s work and creative processes, fulfilling its educational mission with classes and intensives in NYC, workshops in tour cities, and restaging residencies at dance institutions/universities worldwide.
Artistic/Cultural Vision
Trisha Brown Dance Company preserves, presents, and teaches Brown’s seminal body of work with programs designed to ensure accessibility for audiences across cultures, generations, and interests. Brown’s historically distinct and artistically relevant work is an integral part of the American dance canon and has profound influence on choreography and collaborative art-making worldwide. In recognition of her legacy, Brown is the first woman choreographer to receive the coveted MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and, among many other awards, was honored with the National Medal of Arts; Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (French government’s highest artistic honor); and the first-ever NY Dance and Performance ‘Bessie’ Award for Lifetime Achievement. TBDC’s vision will uphold Brown’s position as a premier 20/21st-century artist, promoting continued engagement and rediscovery of her work by forging a new organizational model that extends the life, interest, and context for masterworks of ephemeral art.
