New directions for new work

Mobile States is Australia’s preeminent touring model for extant interdisciplinary and experimental independent performance. Going forward, Performing Lines and the Mobile States consortium members intend to create a more agile platform for the curation, development, presentation and touring of premiere contemporary performance.

For the last 12 years, the Mobile States initiative has seen Australia’s leading contemporary performing arts organisations collaborate to present 35 contemporary works, allowing audiences around Australia to experience the latest in new performance.  Supported by the Australia Council and managed by Performing Lines, the initiative has programmed works by a range of artists and companies including Chunky Move, Back to Back Theatre, Tamara SaulwickAphids, Branch Nebula, Nicola Gunn and Urban Theatre Projects.

Looking to the future, Performing Lines and the Mobile States consortium members are developing a new model for collaboratively identifying, curating and supporting independent artists who are creating the exceptional contemporary works of tomorrow.  Consortium members will offer support at different points of entry in the development of work, including residencies and labs, dramaturgical support and development space for programmed artists. The focus will be on providing pathways for the creation of new experimental and interdisciplinary work of ambition and scale in a rigorous and supportive environment.  Partnerships will be established with regional and international presentation partners to provide increased opportunities for audiences to experience exceptional contemporary Australian work nationally and internationally.

Mobile States is a national consortium made up of six member organisations:
