Critical Culture Ambassadors 2019

About

This year, Salamanca Arts Centre is excited to present, a new initiative for creatively minded young people, in the Critical Culture Ambassador program. Eight selected secondary students from outside of Hobart will part take in a series of events, workshops, Artist talks and exhibition visits. The group will also have some insight into the behind-the-scenes of an Arts organisation, as well as some of Tasmania’s leading commercial galleries, studios and arts institutions.

This years cohort, who will now be engaged in some capacity across SAC’s programs for the next few years, come from New Norfolk High School, Kingston High School and Huonville High School.

“The Tasmanian art scene is pretty amazing
and we are mindful of some of the limitations
that exist for some, in terms of accessing
what’s happening around the Island”
– Emma Porteus, Artistic Director
Salamanca Arts Centre

So far, the Ambassadors have met feature Artists from SAC’s Dark Mofo Program,The In Between, participated in a special print making session with visiting artist Trent Walter from Negative Press, visited a handful of other creative spaces within Hobart, such as Contemporary Arts Tasmania, Good Grief Studio and Penny Contemporary with lots more to come. They will also explore the wonders of Junction Arts Festival in September, with a few other exciting events on the cards for the remainder of the year.

Why

Salamanca Arts Centre recognises the need to support young creatives who would get a lot out of seeing and learning more about the Arts. We think that you should have full access to some vital connections within the sector, particularly if you are likely to go on with your arts practice and thinking.

How

Select Ambassadors will part-take in a series of workshops, Artist talks and exhibition visits, an adventure up north for a few days at Situate at SAC’s partner, Junction Arts Festival and the opportunity to be part of a fresh and inspiring cohort of creative thinkers.

With support from affiliated arts organisations, Salamanca Arts Centre will provide each Ambassador with invaluable tools to learn and actively engage with the arts and cultural sector.
